Start planning ahead for your next local history school trip in the Adirondacks aboard the W.W. Durant. Experience the breathtaking scenery and historic Great Camps of the Adirondacks' largest natural lake.
Itinerary & What You'll See: K-6 class trips are 1 hour in length View Pine Knot (1st Great Camp sold to Collis P Huntington of Souther Pacific RR fame), Echo Camp (Connecticut governor Lounsbury's "camp"), St. Williams (100 yr+ Catholic church built by Durant and on site of original village of Durant, NY). Around Osprey Island (another 100+ yr old church on St. Hubert's isle) and back to dock. We usually see a bald eagle on Big Island. The Adirondack Museum has a great display of the transportation system Durant implemented to get people from Raquette Lake to Blue Mt Lake via rail, steamboat and rail and steamboat again!
Then a short drive to Great Camp Sagamore, the Alfred Vanderbilt wilderness estate for over 50 years for a highlights tour: Main Lodge, dining room, bowling alley!
Sample Schedule:
10:00-11:00 Cruise on Raquette Lake (with or without breakfast pizza)
11:00-11:30 Drive to Great Camp Sagamore
11:30-12:30 Guided tour Sagamore (additional $6 per student; $9 per adult)
Pricing:
Cruise ticket price for all passengers is $9.
1comp teacher ticket included with every 20 students.
Optional: $6 pizza & root beer float in souvenir mug. Sagamore tour $6 per student; $9 per adult. 1 Comp adult per 20 students.
